This is a final boarding call for passengers…

17th & 18th of May 2010
Flight to Christchurch
First full day in Christchurch

After nearly missing my flight to Christchurch - Gemma, I now know what it feels like to have your name called over the tannoy for final boarding (but I wasn’t the last to board and according to the flight attendants, I had heaps of time!), the flight was pretty good. Not much turbulence and an ace choice of movies and TV shows to while away the 3 hour trip to New Zealand.

First impressions of Christchurch? Grey. Wet. Cloudy. Cold. Sound familiar? It’s like Scotland here (thanks for sending my jacket and fleece, mum, they’re very much appreciated!). Got a ride to the hostel and got checked in. It’s okay. I’m paying the equivalent of 12 quid a night (I’m writing this in a restaurant and couldn’t remember how to draw a pound sign… laptop doesn’t even have one being Australian so it’s all good!). After faffing about in my room for a little while, trying and failing to make conversation with my roommates which was akin to drawing blood from the proverbial stone, I ventured out, armed with a tiny map and a hat. Christchurch is awesome because it’s like a giant grid making it practically impossible to get lost. Good for directionally challenged souls like me. Dinner on night 1 was Italian - cannelloni, which wasn’t as good as my dads but tasty nonetheless. Wandered around a little more, trying to get my bearings before the cold forced me inside to the TV room for the rest of the night.

First full day in Christchurch consisted of Subway for lunch (shocked? I’m not. I’m pretty much addicted to meatball subs) and snapping pics as I wandered towards the Cultural Precinct (pretty much everything West of the Cathedral). The Arts Centre was dead, but pretty, the Botanic Gardens were pretty much like every other Botanic Gardens I’ve visited throughout the course of my life and ended up at the Canterbury Museum. I love the Canterbury Museum. I’ve always been a museum geek and this one is no exception. Not only does it have exhibits relating to New Zealand, and specifically, the Canterbury region, but it has the stuff that most museums has: dinosaur skeletons, Asian artefacts, something to do with transport and ambulances (might have glossed over that slightly) and a mummy. An actual mummy. Awesome.

I took the tour with one other person which was actually quite nice but we ended up seeing less than half of the museum, so I’m going back tomorrow to see the rest. Also going to check out the Art Gallery and Cathedral (depending on time!) Finished the day at Little India where I tried Kadai Chicken. Yum. And the naan? Double yum.

On Thurs, I’m going on a wildlife harbour cruise at Littleton (15 mins from Christchurch) then go on a gondola. Words cannot express my terror at the thought of the gondola (which isn’t at all like the ones in Venice nor is it the woman who used to teach us German). It goes high in the sky. HIGH! Over hills. And stuff. Camera will be getting a MASSIVE workout!!

Pics will be uploaded when I get the chance. Took around 80 today. Some of them are dross so I must learn to start deleting things.

Anyway, night,
Love you all,
Kirsty xxoo
