On Wednesday, my roommate Kim and I went for a wander and ended up at the Art Gallery, which was, y’know, an art gallery. Lots of paintings of countryside and people who have been dead for hundreds of years. And a random exhibition called Provocations featuring works by Christine Webster. Weird. I like to think that I’m open-minded when it comes to art, except for the stuff in the MCA in Sydney, because it just sucks there, but yeah, that stuff was a bit too weird for me.
Ended up at the Canterbury Museum again which was awesomely awesome then went for Korean food. I made an arse of eating with chopsticks but the food was good.
(Moment to chortle at the TV which I can see from the dining room: TIME TEAM HAS JUST STARTED AND IT’S OLD!!!!)
Thursday was the harbour cruise at Lyttleton, which I was a bit nervous about given my track record on boats. On the ocean. While looking for dolphins. But really, had nothing to worry about. The cruise was really interesting, the photos I took suck though because the sky refuses to be anything other than a light shade of grey. We saw one of the smallest penguins in the world before (finally) glimpsing the smallest dolphin (Hector’s) in the world. I have a pretty dodgy photo of a dorsal fin, but it was still pretty cool to see a few.
Then it was onto the gondola.
Which wasn’t actually that bad either. As long as I didn’t look down for too long, it wasn’t horrendous at all. Saw some sheep (apparently, there are quite a few of them in New Zealand) and got some pretty good views of the city and the water, looking out to the Pacific.
Lazy night last night followed by a very lazy morning. Oops. But been on a tour of the Cathedral, which was informative and met a couple (the wife was originally from Scotland but has lived in Auckland since she was 3... If only all Glaswegians were that lucky…). They’re actually staying at the hostel, so I’ll probably see them around. Or not. This place has quite a high turnover.
Lots of rain today and I really can’t be bothered going out for dinner. Blah.
Two more days in Christchurch before it’s onto Wellington. Intrigued to see what this nation’s capital city holds.
So long, farewell etc
