I'm in here, Can anybody see me?

Hi de ho!

I’ve discovered things today. Not in the manner of Christopher Columbus or Einstein, obviously, though that would make this blog exponentially more interesting.

I discovered that I am actually an idiot.

I spent five minutes frantically searching for my iPod just over forty-five minutes ago. It wasn’t on my bed, under my bed, in my bag, in the pile of crap next to my bag or in my locker. Then I realised that it was in my pocket. And I was actually listening to it.

This is probably a sign that I really need to get more sleep (Will get to cause of Lack of Sleep in just a sec).

I also discovered that trying to chop up a pineapple with the bluntest knife this side of the hemisphere hurts. My hands hurt, my arms hurt. Clearly my upper body strength has not improved in the slightest over the past eleven months. Or maybe they’re breeding a tougher pineapple than I remember. It could be that the fruits of Australia are conspiring against me.

Anyway!

My past few weeks in Australia have consisted of walking, taking photos, drinking hot chocolate, playing Monopoly (actually WINNING a game of Monopoly!), playing Scrabble (including Made-Up-Word Scrabble, which is infinitely more hilarious than actual Scrabble as you can’t just shove any letters down, you have to come up with a meaning for your words, e.g. aerobix, which is, of course, a breakfast cereal for astronauts and giorguivelt, which is fake Armani clothes made out of a velour/felt material and sget, a Peruvian bird) and seeing the fabulous Leular when she isn’t studying her socks off.

Yesterday, I walked close to 11km (nearly 7 miles? I think) before 1pm! Paying the price for it today though, my left hip is in agony, though knowing me, I’ve probably just whacked it against a doorframe or something. It was a good walk though. Robin and I walked out to Centennial Park to watch Christine finish a 10k for charity, which she did in the very respectable time of just over 56 minutes. Then we walked for what felt like years down Oxford St to Coco Cubano to get something to eat.

The rest of my day was spent lounging in my room, dozing off due to the massive walk and also due to my delightful roommate at the moment. There hasn’t been a night in the past week where she hasn’t come in at some point after 3am. And of course, I’m the lightest sleeper in the world so I wake up whenever she comes in and some nights, I cannot, no matter how hard I try, get back to sleep. This is also compounded by the fact that she is sick and has to cough every minute or so. So, right now, I’m running on very little sleep and there appears to be no relief from her. Le sigh.

Other fun characters at the hostel at the moment include Irish man (of previous blogs), who, yesterday, spent nearly an hour dicing a penny off a glass-topped table and whistling and laughing his annoying machine-gun laugh, and also Jerkface, a man who finds it necessary to sit in the common lounge-y area watching stuff on his laptop, loudly, with no headphones. Considerate people are awesome.

And while I moan and whinge away about being here, I still am enjoying my time in Australia, but I’m ready to come home, despite the terrifying reality that I’m probably going to end up in a job that I’ll hate. At least it’ll give me money to save up so I can plot my next sojourn around the world.

Off for just now, got a bowl of pineapple waiting, a good book and Sia playing on my not-lost iPod.

Kirsty xx
