Australia is 2,941,299 square miles, most of which are desert. That's equal to approximately 31.5 United Kingdoms. Or 96.7 Scotlands. The area of Europe is 3,930,000 sq mi.
Australia is made up of seven states. New South Wales, where I'm at just now, is 312,528 sq mi. Or 3.4 United Kingdoms. Or 10.3 Scotlands.
Where are the other 28.1 United Kingdoms? New South Wales is the fifth biggest state after Western Australia (11 United Kingdoms/33.6 Scotlands), Queensland, Northern Territory and South Australia.
You can drive across Scotland in a couple of hours. To drive across Australia takes around four days. You can't even FLY to the other side of the country in less than four hours.
Uluru, or Ayer's Rock, is somewhere in the Northern Territory, near the middle of Australia among all the desert. The nearest large town (not city) is Alice Springs, 280 miles away. This is further than driving from Aberdeen to Stranraer. The nearest city to Alice Springs is over 930 miles away.
That's one of the places I want to see over the next nine months. I want to go up the East coast and see the Great Barrier Reef though the thought of being in actual open ocean on a boat scares me a little (ferries across the harbour don't make me sick, bobbing around in the middle of the ocean tends to make me feel sick). Melbourne is also on the list of places I want to go to, if only to do the Neighbours tour (yes, Dad. Neighbours.)
Back to work tomorrow... not looking forward to climbing those stairs or the hill tomorrow but work won't be too bad.
Off to cook my dinner!!
Miss you and love you all
xx
